Day 4 Blog (15 Jan. 2015)

Participatory Methods Seminar– TCDC Arusha-Tanzania (12-16 January 2015)

Day 4 was processed important sessions; a) participatory monitoring and evaluation, b) role of R-A in campaign and social movement, c) capacity development and online learning. The participatory monitoring and evaluation was performed by role-play of group of participants, which inspired the participants in a very simple way. The role play portrays that group of farmers cultivating their land out of which one group was monitoring, observing and nurturing their crops throughout the year and other did not do so. Role-play as a tool appeared useful from the experiences of R-A practitioners across the world. And it was followed by PPT of a checklist of M&E used by AA Bangladesh to monitor R-A circles across LRPs. The PM&E is the continuous process to achieve the set goal and objectives which clearly showed in role play of farmers.

As campaign and social movement is our core to theory of change and how R-A process plays a crucial role to generate momentum to create a campaign and social movement. Raj from Nepal shared a case study of Dalit rights movement of eastern part of Nepal. It was the case where Dalit communities started their discussion in R-A circles on their own about the issues of untouchability, dignity, injustice, marginalization from socially constructed structure. They started their discussion and built their conscientisation over their rights with full of dignity and humanity. They organized themselves in the community and rejected to throw the dead animals as such dehumanizing practice had been there in the society for centuries. Such type of courage and confidence was built in R-A circle, which get momentum through mass mobilization, media mobilization to create the campaign and social movement grounded. In the journey of campaign, the campaigners were developed as leaders from the marginalized communities. Dalit has been facing systematic discrimination that starts from the birth to death and even after death. All these conscientisation as well as empowerment is being developed in the R-A circles.
Similarly, Harriet from Uganda shared anti-corruption campaign also known as black Monday. This very campaign was also started from R-A circles and had got momentum at regional and national level. These two cases were followed by a short presentation of the opinion maker's course running in AADK as an example of how public action learning can be used for other purposes besides campaigns.

Then after, another important session on HRBA capacity development networks and peer to peer support through accompaniment, knowledge management and online learning to enhance our core skills in different organizational dimensions to achieve our strategic objectives by 2017.
